Volkswagen Truck and Bus has a new achievement to celebrate. After celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Delivery, the brand is now highlighting the fifth anniversary of the extra-heavy-duty Meteor, which was launched in 2020 and presented for the first time in a 100% virtual format to journalists and customers.
Since its arrival on the market, the Meteor has accumulated over 16,000 registered units in Brazil. It has also expanded to other countries in the region such as Argentina, Costa Rica, Panama, Paraguay, and Uruguay, solidifying its relevance in Latin America.
The lineup includes the 28.480 6x2 and 29.530 6x4 models, designed for long-distance operations. They offer solutions tailored to every need, with a balance of robustness, safety, comfort, and advanced technology.
"The Meteor trucks represent the largest vehicles ever manufactured by Volkswagen Truck and Bus. In total, we invested over R$1 billion in the project at the time of the launch to guarantee a product that meets market demands," highlights Roberto Cortés, the company's president and CEO.
The investment wasn't limited to development and engineering: it also included the construction of a specific assembly line for extra-heavy-duty cabs, from the chassis to the final finishes, incorporating Industry 4.0 processes with a high degree of automation and data connectivity.
Technology and Comfort in the Driver's Seat
The heart of the Meteor family is the 13-liter D26 engine, one of the most advanced in the world, paired with a state-of-the-art 12-speed automated transmission.
The spacious and comfortable cab was designed to give drivers a premium driving experience. Its features include a seat with an integrated seat belt, a four-airbag cab suspension, and a fully digital multifunctional panel that centralizes functions with practicality and safety.
The line also includes the digital RIO system, which offers personalized reports and solutions for each operation. With this support, the reduction in Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) can exceed 5%.
Both the 28.480 and 29.530 models offer the option of up to eight airbags, different wheelbase options (3,200, 3,400, or 3,600 mm), and versions with metallic suspension, which expands their application possibilities in different transport segments.
Retarder: Extra Braking Power
Since 2024, the Meteor has incorporated the retarder brake option, an intelligent system that provides greater safety, control, and efficiency.
The device acts as an independent auxiliary brake: when activated, it generates hydraulic resistance on the transmission's output shaft, smoothly reducing speed and preserving the service brakes.
With six levels of activation, it can operate automatically or be controlled manually from the steering column lever. This solution is key on long descents and allows for a combined braking power of up to 1,225 hp.
In addition to increasing safety, it helps extend the lifespan of components and improve operating costs.
